And on this issue, there has been a telling figure in the public domain for some time.\u00a0<span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:1,&quot;335551620&quot;:1,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.electoralcommission.org.uk\/__data\/assets\/pdf_file\/0010\/179812\/Scottish-independence-referendum-report.pdf\">A survey<\/a>\u00a0commissioned by the Electoral Commission\u00a0following the Scottish\u00a0Independence Referendum (in which 16 and 17-year-olds were entitled to vote) found that an impressive\u00a075%\u00a0had\u00a0taken part.\u00a0<span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:1,&quot;335551620&quot;:1,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The figure is doubly impressive given the fact this was the first time anyone within that group would have voted.\u00a0<span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:1,&quot;335551620&quot;:1,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The survey also rubbished the lazy assumption that because voter turnout has been\u00a0low among 18 to 24-year-olds then it will be similarly low among 16 and 17-year-olds. The claimed turnout\u00a0among\u00a0the former group was just 54% by comparison.<span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:1,&quot;335551620&quot;:1,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The fact that 16 and 17-year-olds voted in large\u00a0numbers in\u00a0the\u00a0Scottish Independence\u00a0referendum\u00a0shows that given the chance, those under 18 will exercise their democratic right.\u00a0<span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:1,&quot;335551620&quot;:1,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.democraticaudit.com\/2018\/01\/18\/beyond-anecdotes-on-lowering-the-voting-age-new-evidence-from-scotland\/\">New research<\/a>\u00a0has now\u00a0supplemented\u00a0this finding by providing evidence that not only will they vote, but that it is highly likely they will\u00a0continue\u00a0to vote and\u00a0be more\u00a0politically\u00a0engaged\u00a0as a result.<span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:1,&quot;335551620&quot;:1,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Through a survey carried out in\u00a0February\u00a02015 (after the\u00a0Scottish Independence Referendum in 2014) it was found that 67% of 16 and 17-year-olds in Scotland indicated they would likely\u00a0vote if allowed to do so in the General Election,\u00a0compared\u00a0to just 39% south of the border.\u00a0<span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:1,&quot;335551620&quot;:1,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Furthermore, while 57% of Scottish respondents said they had taken part in at least one form of non-electoral political engagement, only 40% of 16 and\u00a017-year-olds\u00a0from the rest of the UK reported the same.<span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:1,&quot;335551620&quot;:1,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The report&#8217;s author,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sps.ed.ac.uk\/staff\/social_policy\/jan_eichhorn\">Jan Eichhorn<\/a>, goes on to\u00a0assess\u00a0the\u00a0impact of &#8216;socialising\u00a0influences&#8217;
