However, throughout the year we have worked to ensure electoral reform and democratic issues were leading headlines. Our communications and press team provided in-depth analysis, opinion pieces and interviews to journalists, pushing vital democratic issues higher up the news agenda to increase public support.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The year started with the Government passing the Elections Act mandating that voters will have to show ID when they vote. The ERS provided comment (in print and video) warning of the damaging impact this would have on democracy that was covered in the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mirror.co.uk\/news\/politics\/breaking-tories-approve-assault-democracy-25973459\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mirror<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/tv\/news\/voter-id-democracy-election-bill-vf79a24ff\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Independent<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.politics.co.uk\/news-in-brief\/electoral-reform-campaigners-tell-government-to-stop-and-re-think-as-bill-returns-to-commons\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Politics UK<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenational.scot\/news\/19854523.voter-id-tories-follow-brazen-attack-democracy-bill-passed\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">National<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Scotland. In January, the ERS was also covered making the case for reforming the House of Lords in the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.express.co.uk\/news\/politics\/1554536\/house-of-lords-tory-abolishment-anti-protest-bill\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Express<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, when Conservative MPs flirted with the idea of abolition after peers blocked the Government\u2019s protest bill.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In March, the ERS was covered in the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.co.uk\/article\/women-in-politics-facts-figures-jbvdn30bs\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Times<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> highlighting the still \u201cshocking lack of representation\u201d of women in parliament for International Women\u2019s Day. And in April a report co-produced with IPPR, was covered prominently the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/politics\/2022\/apr\/10\/young-adults-loss-of-faith-in-uk-democracy-survey?CMP=Share_iOSApp_Other\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Observer<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> warning of the dramatic loss of faith young people have in democracy to make their life better.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the lead-up to and during the local elections in April and May there was coverage of ERS research highlighting the absurdly disproportionate result FPTP produces in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mylondon.news\/news\/local-elections-2022-vote-london-23778561\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">MyLondon<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.camdennewjournal.co.uk\/article\/we-need-fairer-voting-system-say%e2%80%88greens-as-party-takes-just-one-seat-at-council-elections-again\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Camden New Journal<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.camdennewjournal.co.uk\/article\/we-need-fairer-voting-system-say%e2%80%88greens-as-party-takes-just-one-seat-at-council-elections-again\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Islington Tribune<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. In Wales, there was also widespread coverage, including on <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.walesonline.co.uk\/news\/wales-news\/there-not-enough-diversity-council-23801826\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wales Online<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, of ERS research showing fewer than a third of council candidates were women.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In April our report with Prof. Sir John Curtice on how Scottish voters were using STV to express their preferences was covered widely, including by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.itv.com\/news\/2022-04-25\/scottish-voters-making-more-use-of-transferable-voting-says-leading-pollster\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ITV<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/wires\/pa\/article-10752981\/Scottish-voters-making-use-transferable-voting-says-leading-pollster.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Daily Mail<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/uk\/scottish-liberal-democrat-electoral-reform-society-conservative-snp-b2065331.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Independent<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/uk\/scottish-liberal-democrat-electoral-reform-society-conservative-snp-b2065331.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Politics.co.uk<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.scottishdailyexpress.co.uk\/news\/scottish-news\/fragmented-unionist-vote-risks-more-26799243\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Scottish Express<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/nation.cymru\/news\/call-for-wales-to-adopt-stv-after-evidence-scotland-has-embraced-the-more-proportionate-voting-system\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Wales.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Following the Tiverton and Honiton and Wakefield by-elections, when there was national media debate about the implications of co-operation between Labour and the Liberal Democrats, ERS research on what PR would have meant for previous General Elections was reported on in the<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.spectator.co.uk\/article\/the-existential-threat-facing-the-tory-party\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Spectator<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.co.uk\/article\/tories-may-never-recover-if-they-lose-in-2024-pf6t6b6bd\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Times<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.heraldscotland.com\/news\/20248607.councils-working-future-local-government\/?ref=rss\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Scotsman<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> also ran an oped from our Director of Campaigns, Willie Sullivan, on how PR could end the scourge of tactical voting.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The ERS has also led on issues such as continued expansion of the Lords and the latest honours lists, with comments on the need to reform the upper chamber in the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/5d03de51-a47f-469c-b850-a67d2ffed104\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Financial Times<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as well as coverage in<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/politics\/2022\/aug\/02\/poll-shows-54-against-boris-johnson-drawing-up-resignation-honours-list\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the Guardian<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of research showing more than half of the public were opposed to Boris Johnson\u2019s controversial list of new peerages.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Our chief executive, Darren Hughes was also interviewed by the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/world\/2022\/08\/29\/boris-johnson-house-lords\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Washington Post<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for an article explaining to American readers what the House of Lords is and the urgent case for reforming it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Throughout the summer, the ERS highlighted the growing need for democratic renewal with coverage in the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/independentpremium\/voices\/boris-johnson-keir-starmer-electoral-reform-b2148488.html?r=25466\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Independent<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on how the issue needs to be a priority for Keir Starmer in August, as well as calls on the Conservative leadership candidates to restore trust in politics, covered in the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mirror.co.uk\/news\/politics\/liz-truss-rishi-sunak-urged-27878229\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mirror<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Over the Summer, the ERS was also focused on supporting colleagues in the trade union movement and Labour to successfully pass pro-PR motions in the union Unison in June and then at the Labour Party in September. We worked with partner organisations such as Politics for the Many and Labour for a New Democracy (L4ND) to coordinate a series of op-eds ahead of the respective conferences to powerfully make the case for electoral reform, such as in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/labourlist.org\/2022\/06\/it-is-imperative-that-labour-commits-to-electoral-reform-in-its-next-manifesto\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Labour List<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and in the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/politics\/2022\/sep\/24\/electoral-reform-fairer-system-labour\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Observer<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">More recently, the ERS has researched and commented on the prospect of Liz Truss issuing a resignation honours list after just six weeks in office. Our comments that peerages cannot be \u201crewards for failure\u201d were covered by the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mirror.co.uk\/news\/politics\/liz-truss-spends-final-weekend-28309280\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mirror<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.co.uk\/article\/lords-watchdog-snubs-tory-peers-t80nkhv8d?shareToken=1944186b1231132f9fe0852b3e995656\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sunday Times<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/wires\/pa\/article-11344369\/Liz-Truss-resignation-honours-reward-failure-campaigner-says.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Daily Mail<\/span><\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/inews.co.uk\/news\/liz-trusss-resignation-honours-list-must-not-be-reward-for-failure-campaigners-warn-1928157\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">i News<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, as well a wide range of regional titles. The ERS has also been at the forefront of keeping the debate going on the incoming voter ID requirement as part of the Elections Act. In October our comments on the need for mirrors and screens to be bought into polling stations were carried in the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mirror.co.uk\/news\/politics\/councils-ordered-40000-mirrors-warped-28353937\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mirror<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/inews.co.uk\/news\/politics\/councils-forced-mirrors-polling-stations-government-new-voter-id-laws-1941040\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">i paper<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Wales, ERS Cymru has also featured prominently in coverage of democratic issues, such as the Welsh Government\u2019s plans to expand the Senedd, replace AMS with a more proportional voting list system and introduce statutory gender quotas, which was <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.walesonline.co.uk\/news\/politics\/senedd-more-mss-reform-assembly-23520114\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">announced earlier this year<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. ERS Cymru\u2019s director Jess Blair has featured on<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.walesonline.co.uk\/news\/wales-news\/radical-changes-how-you-register-25227752\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wales Online<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as well as the BBC\u2019s Walescast podcast and ITV\u2019s Sharp End debate programme discussing the proposals.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Elsewhere, ERS Cymru has led on wider democratic reforms in the country, including pilots to increase voter turnout covered by the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/uk-wales-politics-61246849\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">BBC<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and improving the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/uk-wales-61094780\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">teaching of democratic issues in schools<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Meanwhile, in Scotland the ERS has been raising the salience of democratic issues. This has included being quoted on the need to clean up \u2018dark\u2019 political money in Scottish politics, covered in the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.co.uk\/article\/call-for-dark-money-campaign-inquiry-sklbqwlgs\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Times<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and also on how to improve Scottish local democracy, which has been covered in the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.heraldscotland.com\/news\/20248607.councils-working-future-local-government\/?ref=rss\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Herald<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and the<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.co.uk\/article\/lessons-from-manchester-how-to-reform-local-government-in-scotland-8gpf763dx\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Times<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4>Number of media hits Nov 2021 \u2013 October 2022<\/h4>\n<p>Almost 2,000 news and comment pieces mentioned the ERS\u2019s work in 2022, this was driven by our work furthering the cause of electoral reform in the UK as well as campaigning for a more democratic House of Lords.<\/p>\n<p>This compares to roughly 1,000 mentions in the previous year. The main drivers of hits was coverage of ERS work at three main points in the year. The highest was news Liz Truss was planning a \u2018rewards for failure\u2019 resignation honours list after fewer than 50 days in power (which generated more than 400 mentions), followed by news Boris Johnson was due to inflate the size of the Lords further with his own resignation list (generating more than 200 mentions) and the news Labour had passed a pro-PR motion at its conference (generating just under 200 mentions).<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"row flexible-block\">\n<div class=\"col-xs-12 wysiwyg\">\n<h3>Support the ERS<\/h3>\n<p>As momentum builds for electoral reform, your support is more important than ever.
