From the simple fact that 50% of us are women &#8211; to research that points to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.unwomen.org\/en\/articles\/facts-and-figures\/facts-and-figures-womens-leadership-and-political-participation#_ednref18:~:text=There%20is%20established,%5B17%5D.\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">improved decision-making when women are involved in leadership<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, and that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.electoral-reform.org.uk\/voters-prefer-decisions-made-by-panels-balanced-between-men-and-women\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">people like decisions made by mixed groups<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0Our Parliament made a positive step toward equal representation at the 2024 General Election, with more women MPs elected than ever before, but there\u2019s still room for improvement. The lack of women in Parliament is the result of many small decisions that have blocked the road to equal representation in our politics.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Women\u2019s Representation in the House of Commons<\/h3>\n<div class=\"flourish-embed flourish-parliament\" data-src=\"visualisation\/22584973\"><script src=\"https:\/\/public.flourish.studio\/resources\/embed.js\"><\/script><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/public.flourish.studio\/visualisation\/22584973\/thumbnail\" width=\"100%\" alt=\"parliament visualization\" \/><\/noscript><\/div>\n<p>In the House of Commons, there are currently 263 MPs who are women, out of 650 MPs in total. That means that we now have the highest ever proportion of women MPs, at 40%.<\/p>\n<p>But though 40% is a record high, it\u2019s still a far cry from equal representation. And globally, we\u2019re lagging behind: <a href=\"https:\/\/data.ipu.org\/women-ranking\/?date_month=3&amp;date_year=2025\">the UK ranks just 27th in the world ranking of women in parliament<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, across the different parties, there are varying levels of representation. 46% of all Labour MPs are women; in the Conservative party, 24% of MPs are women, and for the Liberal Democrats, the figure is 44%. So, there\u2019s no parity in sight at party level, either.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"TextRun SCXW206876027 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-GB\" xml:lang=\"EN-GB\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW206876027 BCX0\">Under-representation begins long before MPs take their seats<\/span><\/span><span class=\"EOP SCXW206876027 BCX0\" data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:false,&quot;134233118&quot;:false,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:1,&quot;335551620&quot;:1,&quot;335559685&quot;:0,&quot;335559737&quot;:0,&quot;335559738&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:278}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The root of this imbalance in the House of Commons starts before we actually head to the polls and vote for MPs.<\/p>\n<p>This is because candidates (excluding independents) standing in election are chosen by political parties. So the fact that we have such poor representation in Parliament, even though 50% of us are women, is largely the result of parties choosing to stand male candidates in winnable seats.<\/p>\n<p>In the 2024 UK General Election, not a single party choose a gender equal slate of candidates. Overall, just 31% of candidates were women.<\/p>\n<p>If there aren\u2019t enough women for us to vote for in the first place, then we\u2019ll never get equal representation. That needs to change: parties need to do more to build representation into the candidate selection process. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.electoral-reform.org.uk\/a-big-win-for-fairer-politics-why-section-106-matters\/\">Fortunately the UK Government is now taking steps to address this, now that they\u2019ve enacted a piece of legislation that we\u2019ve been pushing for since 2018<\/a>. Political parties will now be required to release diversity data about their candidates at every stage of selection \u2013 which will make it easier to hold parties to account on representation, and to identify where the barriers to women lie.<\/p>\n<p>However, beyond ensuring that enough women are actually being selected, they also need to stand in seats where they have a chance of winning. There&#8217;s no point having half of your candidates as women, if they are all challengers in seats they have no chance of winning.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"TextRun SCXW30547748 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-GB\" xml:lang=\"EN-GB\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW30547748 BCX0\">Women\u2019s Representation in the House of Lords<\/span><\/span><span class=\"EOP SCXW30547748 BCX0\" data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<div class=\"flourish-embed flourish-parliament\" data-src=\"visualisation\/22586536\"><script src=\"https:\/\/public.flourish.studio\/resources\/embed.js\"><\/script><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/public.flourish.studio\/visualisation\/22586536\/thumbnail\" width=\"100%\" alt=\"parliament visualization\" \/><\/noscript><\/div>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In the House of Lords, women\u2019s representation continues to be pitifully unequal.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">There are 829 Members of the House of Lords. Just 258 of them are women. That\u2019s just 31% of all members of the House of Lords who are women.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">This is an especially troubling figure given that it\u2019s not the result of an election, but appointment. Since the Prime Minister has the power to appoint anyone they want, we could easily have a House of Lords made up with 50% women.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Unequal representation amongst our lawmakers is being forced on the public.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"TextRun SCXW15067310 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-GB\" xml:lang=\"EN-GB\" data-contrast=\"none\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW15067310 BCX0\" data-ccp-parastyle=\"heading 3\">Women\u2019s Representation across Parliament as a whole<\/span><\/span><span class=\"EOP SCXW15067310 BCX0\" data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134245418&quot;:true,&quot;134245529&quot;:true,&quot;335559738&quot;:160,&quot;335559739&quot;:80}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Looking at our parliament as whole \u2013 both the House of Commons and the House of Lords \u2013 women\u2019s representation is lacking.<\/p>\n<p>Across both chambers of parliament, women make up only 35% of members of the Commons and the Lords<\/p>\n<p>But the work toward a gender equal parliament can\u2019t end there.
