Our team have worked with journalists across national and local media to provide in-depth analysis, opinion pieces and interviews, to make the case for electoral reform and push vital democratic issues higher up the news agenda to increase public support.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The end of last year saw a sharp focus on electoral reform\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/liveapp.inews.co.uk\/category\/warning-to-labour-as-general-election-saw-biggest-shift-in-votes-since-1931\/content.html\">with coverage of our report on the 2024 general election<\/a>, quickly followed by the Lib Dems\u2019 Private Member\u2019s Bill\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/article-14153517\/Keir-Starmer-60-MPs-Lib-Dem-ditch-past-post-election-voting-replace-proportional.html\">passing its first parliamentary vote<\/a>, both of which saw the ERS quoted in the national press. Jess Garland later appeared on the Politics Home podcast\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/creators.spotify.com\/pod\/profile\/politicshome\/episodes\/Our-politics-is-broken--can-PR-fix-it-e2s8sel\">to discuss whether PR can fix our broken politics<\/a>. There was growing interest in the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.france24.com\/en\/live-news\/20241209-uk-s-aristocratic-lawmakers-prepare-for-life-after-the-lords\">bill to remove the hereditary peers<\/a>\u00a0as well as political finance, with ERS being quoted\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/politics\/2024\/nov\/30\/uk-political-donations-dark-money\">in a Guardian investigation into dark money<\/a>\u00a0flowing into our politics. The ERS was also prominent in the debate over yet more peers being added to the House of Lords in the New Year\u2019s list, with Darren highlighting its\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mirror.co.uk\/news\/politics\/breaking-keir-starmer-unveils-raft-34350968\">already \u2018ludicrous size\u2019 in the Mirror<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>We garnered national press attention with our analysis of the local elections showing that Reform had received the \u2018winner\u2019s bonus\u2019 under FPTP for the first time, which\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mirror.co.uk\/news\/politics\/nigel-farages-reform-uk-reached-35216679\">the Mirror<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/politics\/live\/2025\/may\/13\/keir-starmer-island-strangers-immigration-latest-uk-politics-live-news?filterKeyEvents=false&amp;page=with%3Ablock-68234f348f0824efe73e3850#block-68234f348f0824efe73e3850\">Guardian<\/a>\u00a0covered. Politico also wrote a long-read on how the electoral system was\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/nigel-farage-british-electoral-system-uk-politics-westminister-fptp-mps\/\">struggling to cope with multiparty politics<\/a>, quoting Jess Garland on how FPTP is now \u2018failing on its own terms\u2019. Jess was\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/britain-hereditary-peers-house-of-lords-labour-party-hereditary-peerages-bill\/\">quoted again in Politico<\/a>\u00a0on how the hereditary peers were \u2018abusing their position\u2019 to delay the bill to remove them. In Scotland, we laid the ground for the Dunfermline citizens\u2019 assembly, with\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.heraldscotland.com\/opinion\/24971316.mull-school-saga-shows-happens-local-democracy-fails\/\">Willie writing an oped<\/a>\u00a0in the Herald on the lack of democracy in the new school fiasco on the Isle of Mull and in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.heraldscotland.com\/news\/25114106.poll-shows-scots-feel-anxious-angry-disconnected-politics\/\">a front page piece in the Herald<\/a>\u00a0on how Scots trust political institutions that are closer to home. In Wales, Jess Blair led the charge on warnings that the next Senedd could the least representative of women ever, with coverage in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nation.cymru\/opinion\/why-the-next-senedd-could-be-the-least-representative-of-women-ever\/\">Nation Cymru<\/a>\u00a0and the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/pembrokeshire-herald.com\/109879\/warning-issued-as-gender-balance-in-next-senedd-under-threat\/\">Pembrokeshire Herald<\/a>. There was also growing interest over this period in votes at 16, with Darren going on LBC with\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/electoralreformsociety.sharepoint.com\/sites\/ERS-AllStaff\/_layouts\/15\/stream.aspx?id=%2Fsites%2FERS%2DAllStaff%2FShared%20Documents%2FERS%20Media%20Coverage%2FLBC%20Iain%20Dale%20%2D%20votes%20at%2016%20%2D%20Darren%20April%209%2Emov&amp;referrer=StreamWebApp%2EWeb&amp;referrerScenario=AddressBarCopied%2Eview%2Ec86bed8f%2D0711%2D4dfb%2Da56f%2D9294e799e8d2\">Iain Dale<\/a>\u00a0and then\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/electoralreformsociety.sharepoint.com\/sites\/ERS-AllStaff\/_layouts\/15\/stream.aspx?id=%2Fsites%2FERS%2DAllStaff%2FShared%20Documents%2FERS%20Media%20Coverage%2FLBC%20Nick%20Ferrari%20%2D%20votes%20at%2016%20%2D%20Darren%20Feb%2011%2Emov&amp;referrer=StreamWebApp%2EWeb&amp;referrerScenario=AddressBarCopied%2Eview%2Ea531ce89%2D4252%2D4eee%2D9ca8%2Dc471db01d3de\">Nick Ferrari<\/a>\u00a0to debate its merits.<\/p>\n<p>The ERS was prominent in the coverage on the government\u2019s announcement in the summer that it would be expanding the franchise to 16- and 17-year-olds in the Elections Bill, with Darren quote in the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/live\/c93kkg37n3kt?post=asset%3Ad11ce7a8-a03e-4ef1-90a4-0f08dced3119#post\">BBC<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/41421587-bc65-432a-a8ca-7368d39177c7?segmentId=2c1df321-36a4-1206-2c08-112c059dd69d\">FT<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mirror.co.uk\/news\/politics\/votes-16-17-year-olds-35574904\">Mirror<\/a>, among other outlets.
