You seems to travel a lot, and takes a lot pictures of animals. Perhaps you heard of the kenyan elephant named Craig? He passed away recently, says the news [1]. Just FYI (perhaps you have met him)... // Zquid (talk) 12:32, 4 January 2026 (UTC)Reply
Thank you for this information. I had never heard of this elephant and have never been to Kenya so I only learned about it now with your link. These tusks were impressive, may Craig rest in peace -- Giles Laurent (talk) 15:00, 4 January 2026 (UTC)Reply

Support This is a good image that illustrates the species well as an unencumbered side view often does.
I support the nomination but IMHO I think for this image, you could have taken your scope up one level to best-of-species rather than the lower and more limiting species with view sub-scope. VI ratings are not forever. If another photographer comes along with a better image that meets the generic scope of the nomination, they can challenge the existing VI by Most Valued Review. A best-of-species VI is at the highest level and in general, more difficult to challenge than at a lower level. --GRDN711 (talk) 01:23, 27 January 2026 (UTC)Reply

★Your nomination has been reviewed and promoted★ Congratulations! The image you nominated was reviewed and has now been promoted as a valued image. It is considered to be the most valued image on Commons within the scope: Coracias caudatus (Lilac-breasted roller) on the ground, spreading wings, showing wing upperside. If you would like to nominate another image, please do so at Valued images candidates.
@GRDN711, the one you have linked is in flight and not landing! Also the one you have linked is completely blurry with no details and the light is much worse than the present candiafe showcasing the beautiful vibrant colors of this bird -- Giles Laurent (talk) 22:05, 26 January 2026 (UTC)Reply
@Giles - In your other image, I could see that the bird was taking off. In this one, it is not apparent and I would not know it if you has not told me. So, "landing" as a sub-scope is a little dubious. As for the display of the upper wing, the other image clearly shows a full display of both the wing and tail feathers. Yes, your image is technically superior as you are a better photographer. But for VI, while good quality is encouraged, the requirement for review is at the size and resolution of the image on this page. The other image better illustrates the pattern of upper wing feathers, including the tail feathers which are lost in this nomination. --GRDN711 (talk) 01:51, 27 January 2026 (UTC)Reply
@GRDN711 I 100% promise it just landed from a nearby bush to search insects on the ground (which he successfully found). Moreover the other image you have linked has one wing hidden behind the bird while the present one shows completely every single feather of both wings. Also, the bluriness of the other picture is already immediately visible at review size while the present candidate has every feather in focus and without motion blur. -- Giles Laurent (talk) 04:05, 27 January 2026 (UTC)Reply
Comment I am doubly saddened by the outcome of this nomination. Firstly, the negative vote was inept, but I am especially astonished that no one stepped forward to rectify this injustice. This image can be submitted to the FP. --Archaeodontosaurus (talk) 06:58, 31 January 2026 (UTC)Reply
Comment To me this is a valued image of the species on the ground with wings spread. Visually, I am not able to see that it is in the landing phase of flight. Unfortunately, per "verifiable" and "no original research" criteria of Wikipedia, the statement of the photographer, however accurate, cannot be relied on. If the scope is modified as suggested, I will support. --Tagooty (talk) 03:46, 2 February 2026 (UTC)Reply

Oppose The action is appealing but at f/2.8, the only in-focus spot within this image is the whiskers. Needs to have more depth-of-field and overall sharpness to best represent the species. --GRDN711 (talk) 05:49, 17 February 2026 (UTC)Reply
Comment True - you have one key element in focus - the whiskers, but the rest of the face and body is not. Overall, the image just looks too blurry. --GRDN711 (talk) 05:55, 18 February 2026 (UTC)Reply
★Your nomination has been reviewed and promoted★ Congratulations! The image you nominated was reviewed and has now been promoted as a valued image. It is considered to be the most valued image on Commons within the scope: Geosciurus inauris (Cape ground squirrel) on a tree, frontal view. If you would like to nominate another image, please do so at Valued images candidates.
@GRDN711 this is a ground squirrel and not a tree squirrel (they are different species). It is an interesting behavior to have a ground squirrel stand on a tree because ground squirrels are supposed to live on the ground and in burrows in the ground. The image you linked is a simple ground squirrel standing on the ground and not a ground squirrel perched on a tree. -- Giles Laurent (talk) 07:54, 18 February 2026 (UTC)Reply
Comment Totally understand the difference between a ground squirrel and a tree squirrel. Adding the phrase "on a tree" adds excessive description that is not characteristic of the species but is intended to make your image appear more valuable than it is. If the scope becomes, "Geosciurus inauris (Cape ground squirrel), frontal view", the alternative example I gave is much better and more valuable at representing the species. --GRDN711 (talk) 07:16, 20 February 2026 (UTC)Reply
Once again, you're comparing this image to another one of a completely different scope, which doesn't make sense. The present scope is a very interesting and valuable behavior for the species. Your claim on the behavior being not characteristic of the species is not only irrelevant but moreover wrong. Ground squirrels can occasionally climb trees primarily for safety to escape predators or for surveillance of the area. -- Giles Laurent (talk) 07:58, 20 February 2026 (UTC)Reply
@Gower Per COM:VIS, I start with VI being the best of species; then add another 50 or so valid VI opportunities as sub-scopes (is fifty not enough?) that represent visual differences in sex, single/group activity and typical behavior as long as it illustrates the species well.
In this case, "on a tree" is just a feature of this image that the nominator pulled into the scope to make this VI nom appear unique and therefore valuable. It is not typical species behavior and exactly what is meant by "too narrow" a scope per COM:VIS. The image is technically competent but does not provide a good frontal view of this ground squirrel. This one shows a much better frontal view.
As I already explained, "on a tree" is a typical behavior that this species can adopt for different reasons than tree squirrels so your statement is once again wrong. Ground squirrels can climb on trees for safety to escape predators or for surveillance of the area. This image is the only one on Wikimedia commons of this behavior and is very valuable. It's now been three times that you spammed your same comment on this nomination and your two additional comments added nothing new to your first comment. You have your own interpretation of the rules that is different from everyone else and it's not by repeating it three times in a row that you'll change this. I'd appreciate it if you wouldn't restate with a different wording your opinion a 4th time. Thank you for your understanding -- Giles Laurent (talk) 17:59, 22 February 2026 (UTC)Reply

If you would like to nominate another image, please do so at Valued images candidates.
Oppose "looking out of its burrow" is excessive description taken from the image that makes the scope too narrow. It is not behavior uniquely characteristic of this species but would apply to any burrow animal.
Also, the scope-category showing just 3 images for comparison under Category:Geosciurus inauris needs improvement. As noted in Wikipedia – “Xerus inauris and Geosciurus inauris refer to the same species, the Cape ground squirrel. The name "Geosciurus inauris" is a subgenus classification, while "Xerus inauris" is the specific name for this species. Both names describe the same ground squirrel found in southern Africa.” There should be at least 100 images of this species to compare to. --GRDN711 (talk) 06:55, 18 February 2026 (UTC)Reply
@GRDN711 this is a ground squirrel and not a tree squirrel. This species lives in burrows on the ground and this is one of them. Having only part of their body out the burrow to inspect if the area is safe is a very typical behavior of this species that is extremely valuable as a scope. I used the same binomial species name as used in the Wikipedia article. If you look the images in Xerud inauris, the present still is the best representation of the scope -- Giles Laurent (talk) 07:59, 18 February 2026 (UTC)Reply
@Giles Laurent Totally understand the difference between a ground squirrel and a tree squirrel. Wikipedia is not VI nomination - different rues and context. Now let's bring focus to the issue, which is not the image, but the scope. In your last response I do find some merit in the ground squirrel behavior of cautiously peering from its burrow. I will not support the scope as written (still find it too wordy to be a generic scope) but withdraw my oppose. --GRDN711 (talk) 00:48, 22 February 2026 (UTC)Reply

It isn't. The bird and the tree it is standing on are in the shadows while behind the tree it was completely sunny so that's probably what created this impression to you but the WB is correct -- Giles Laurent (talk) 09:02, 24 February 2026 (UTC)Reply

Comment The linked sub-cat has only this one image. There are several other images of this sub-species in the parent CAT, including some potential VIs. It will help the review if the images of the ssp are moved from the parent to the subcat. --Tagooty (talk) 09:11, 4 March 2026 (UTC)Reply
The image you linked is of much smaller resolution and quality while also having a too wide crop. The light in your link also doesn't show the usual colors of the bird. -- Giles Laurent (talk) 10:09, 4 March 2026 (UTC)Reply

2024 Picture of the Year:Mundari man polishing the horns of one of his Watusi cows using a mixture of cow urine and ash as a ritualistic and protective practice in a temporary cattle camp in Terekeka, South Sudan.
Dear Wikimedian,
Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2025 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year is the twentieth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favourite images featured on Commons during the last year (2025) to produce a single Picture of the Year.
Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.
For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topical categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you may vote for as many images as you like. The top 30 overall and the top 5% of most popular images in each category will continue to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just five images to become the Picture of the Year.

...for everything you've done to make POTY run smoothly the last few years. You've been so helpful at making sure we stay on track, and you've caught a number of problems that I probably wouldn't have. By the way, I've been taking a look at your FPs this year and they're just stunning--incredible work as always. Ingenuity (talk) 15:36, 7 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
Many thanks for this very heartwarming and friendly message, much appreciated! Always happy to help keep things running! :)
Thank you also for the pictures, I tried to nominate as many of my best photos as possible for this POTY edition (I'm not sure I can have the same level of images for the next POTYs)

Hi everyone,
Wikimedia Commons is pleased to finally announce the winners of this year's Picture of the Year 2025 contest! We had some truly incredible finalists to choose from, but the community has spoken.
Here are your top three winning images:
First place: The aftermath of an Israeli airstrike in Gaza City on October 9, 2023, leaving widespread destruction in the Rimal area. Attribution: WAFA (Q2915969) / CC-BY-SA 3.0
Second place: Baby cape fur seal (Arctocephalus pusillus) sleeping at Cape cross, Namibia. Attribution: Giles Laurent / CC-BY-SA 4.0
Third place: A gigantic jet photographed from the International Space Station by astronaut Nichole Ayers. Attribution: public domain
You can view the full results and see where all your favorite images placed here: Full 2025 Results
I also want to highlight what an incredible turnout we had. In the second round, we saw a massive jump in both the number of users voting and the total votes cast. We had exactly 13,979 votes cast by 3,509 users! To put that in perspective, last year we had 7,403 votes from 2,837 users. It is amazing to see that level of growth and community engagement.
Thank you to everyone who voted, helped organize, and generally made the contest such a huge success this year!
