Dear member of the Commons Photographers User Group,
I wish you a Happy New Year! As it has been our tradition at the beginning of the new year for a while, we're sharing our most memorable shots of the past year with each other. I invite you to share a picture that is particular meaningful to you and to describe why that's the case. Also, as Wikimania 2023 will be here before we know it (August 16 to 19), please consider adding your thoughts on our planning page, where we gather ideas for how we can make Commons photography more visible than in the years before.

Dear member of the Commons Photographers User Group,
This is a quick reminder that our next meeting will happen on Saturday, August 5th. If you haven't registered yet and you're interested in learning more about underwater photography and “Flickypedia”, please sign up on this page. Also, I invite you to fill out this survey created by the people who are working on the Flickr-to-Wikimedia Commons software. Your input will make a difference.
We haven't had a virtual meeting in a while and I'm so looking forward to this weekend!
If you want to take part in WSC2023, please consult this page. Only some national categories are associated to competitions with local prizes.
If you are an expert user, we remind you that images uploaded within the deadline can be included in any case in their national category even if not uploaded with the main interface.
If you already took part in a country that has completed its upload phase (such as Russia), please consider improving the description in English of your files (click on the edit button), since such description is what the international jury will use to evaluate them. World finalists will be finalized after March 2024.
Sorry for bothering you and have a nice wiki.

Dear fellow Commons photographer,
I hope this message finds you well. As you might already know, the Flickr Foundation has been busy creating a new Flickr-to-Commons bridge (“Flickypedia”) this year. After a successful demo at the GLAM Wiki Conference in Montevideo, the Flickr Foundation team is now inviting all members of the Commons Photographers User Group to be the first to review their alpha, reporting any technical issues or other feedback via the Flickypedia project talk page.
At the same time, this message is an opportunity for me to thank you for your trust and support over the past couple of years. Since 2017, we've grown into being one of the largest user groups in the Wikimedia universe. I've tremendously enjoyed interacting with all of our members when it came to joint photowalks at Wikimanias, virtual Zoom meetings where we covered a wide variety of photography topics, as well as our annual “Most memorable shot of the year”, among many other events. As I'm not running for an official position in our current board election, this will be my last message on behalf of the user group to you. Thanks for all the happy moments we shared together over the years! I hope you'll continue creating free images for the millions of people we serve through Wikipedia and Commons.

Hello, regarding the deletion notifications, I think it's best to disengage. I understand that you really wish to keep the photos, and I agree with you that they should be kept (as I said, I'm an inclusionist), but I don't think that it will help to continue the discussion on the deletion request, and, especially if you are accusing the filing party, of malicious intent, it might actually backfire and you might find yourself at some of the disciplinary boards of Wiki Commons. I think all arguments for keeping and/or deleting the images have been made. We've done what we were able to do to keep the images, and now it's up to an admin to decide what to do.
I think that at least some of the images will not be deleted (e.g. that of Jasper Zoova even if there's no article on him — I've seen that another editor, who is not engaged in the deletion discussion, has created a Wikidata entry on Zoova). I've done what I could to establish the people's notability, now it's up to the admins to decide whether the filing party's argument of non-notability is correct or not. I think, given that there's a VRT permission for the photos and that at least some of the people are notable to some extent, there's a decent chance that the photos will be kept, especially since there's no consensus in the community to delete them, and there's no other urging/significant reason to delete them (such as "copyright violation"). So, the only potential reason is "out of scope", but in such cases, where things are up for a case by case analysis and measured on a rather subjective scale of what's in scope and what is not, I would say, that consensus or lack thereof matters for the closing admin's decision to keep or delete the images. And the current situation looks like there's no consensus to delete the images, especially since it's not just you —the uploader— who is objecting the deletion, but also me —an independent, uninvolved Wikipedian. And there's also the person who created the Wikidata entry on Jasper Zoova, who is neither you, nor I. Given this, I think, there's a chance that the images won't be deleted, so we can step back from the discussion now and leave it to the admins.
You could also contact the person, who created the Jasper Zoova entry, and ask them to give some input to the deletion discussion. However, be aware, the person, who created that entry, also added several of those photos to the Category:Men of Estonia (not notable), so that person might end up supporting the deletion of some of the photos while objecting the deletion of some others. But it still might be good to have a third person contribute their opinion to the case. That person also seems to be active on the Estonian Wiki project and thus might be familiar with the people depicted in the photos. :)
Sorry, for the wall of text. I just thought it might be good to express some support and give some advice since it seemed like the deletion request was getting to you quite a bit... Anyway, I wish you a good day :) Nakonana (talk) 14:37, 30 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
There is no lack of small, blurry and repetitive snapshots. Going after a decent files (that are actually used) is extreme deletionism, and that should not be tolerated. What next? He nominates photos of African writers for deletion, as he has never heard about them, or photos about cultural monuments, as there are no articles on them (or he just considers them promotional). Already the damage to the reputation of Wikimedia Commons would be immense.
One example of an unused file there: Silberg. He has been a lecturer on multiple public universities / colleges, held department director position, has published books, and is a municipal politician. Some time ago even brought a manor house. He is not too notable, but if there would be an article on him in the Estonian Wikipedia, then we would consider him easily notable enough to keep the article (assuming the article quality is also reasonable). // As for Zoova, we should actually have an article about him.
And I also don't like that "newbe" insulting me and lecturing me about how Wikipedia works... I have been contributing since 2006 and I am an administrator in multiple Wikimedia projects. Also, as an Estonian I am far more aware on how notable someone is or is not. Not everyone we would find notable for an article should have an article in English Wikipedia, but Wikimedia Commons should serve all projects.
He may have a lot of edits thanks to the massive use of the Cat-a-lot tool, but there should be some deeper investigation about his activities. Going around and nominationg stuff for deletion without even checking first is clear vandalism. Kruusamägi (talk) 13:16, 31 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
@Nakonana: I now also looked at his user talkpage history and there are comments like this. So this seems pretty clear, that this user has done the same thing in numerous times before and keeps on doing so unless he is stopped. Kruusamägi (talk) 14:04, 31 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
"nominates photos of African writers for deletion" This actually does happen — not necessarily by this user but in general it's something that I've come across on the deletion request page and it also happens when new articles on En Wiki are created that are stubs at the time of creation and don't establish very obviously to the En Wiki user that the subject is notable (like, mentioning that the subject is a recipient of a locally well-known award might not be enough to convince an En Wiki user of the subject's notability). Some don't even seem to do a courtesy Google search before nominating for deletion, unfortunately. That's why deletion requests that state "not notable person" or "who is this?" usually spark my curiosity and I do a Google search on the depicted person if the person's name is attached somewhere. If I find something, I post my results as a comment on the deletion request page for the admins to assess notability. I also think that explicitly hunting for supposedly out of scope stuff is kind of a waste of time. Hunting for copyright violations certainly makes sense, but out of scope stuff doesn't harm anyone if it just sits around (until someone accidentally stumbles on it, or not). And as for the nominations of this user in particular, you might have a case as there's a history for that already[1]. But I also see that they are nominating clear copyvios and that's appreciated, so, personally, I'm not at a point where I would report them, but I understand that some might want to. Nakonana (talk) 14:32, 31 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
Adding those Google search results is a really valuable addition. People who don't bother to do even basic checks and generate that much mess for others with non-needed deletion requests should be blocked, as this is extremely damaging to the project. There is nothing to achieve there besides demotivating photographers/uploaders. It even doesn't save any memory space, as all deleted files are still kept. Kruusamägi (talk) 11:58, 4 September 2024 (UTC)Reply
@Romaine: We haven't had any access to the wikilovesmonuments.ee website for years (the domain no longer belongs to us). No user should be directed there!
We are not overly interested in setting up some English pages, as whatever Estonian IP-addresses the banner is shown, the person should be able to speak Estonian (or in rare cases outside of that, just use a translation function in the browser).
Hi Kruusamägi, Officially it is asked for by the international team, but I am not going to demand it. I just wanted to know the status of the old wlm.ee url as it was still linked in the infrastructure for Estonia. I think I removed it now everywhere and the links go all to the Wikipedia page. Romaine (talk) 19:01, 31 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
I have noticed this part, but at the same time I have also participated in other countries by sometimes uploading images, and foreigners have uploaded images here, and I don't see too much need to translate stuff foreigners would not be interested in. There is just a need to know monument ID-s and click on the upload link. :D Kruusamägi (talk) 19:28, 31 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
@Leaanyka Leisson: pildikogumiskampaanias "Külast külla" kogusime inimeste enda tehtud fotosid, sest ilma loata kellegi teise fotode lisamine on autoriõiguste rikkumine. Kas sul on lisatud fotode puhul nõusolek fotograafidelt olemas või oleks mõistlik need pildid kustutada? Kruusamägi (talk) 12:11, 15 September 2024 (UTC)Reply
Round 1 of Picture of the Year 2023 voting is open!

2022 Picture of the Year: Great Cormorant (Phalacrocorax carbo), Little Egret (Egretta garzetta) and Gadwall (Mareca strepera) in Nepal.
Dear Wikimedian,
Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2023 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the eighteenth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2023) to produce a single Picture of the Year.
Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.
For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topical categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you may vote for as many images as you like. The top 30 overall and top 5% of most popular images in each category will continue to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just three images to become the Picture of the Year.

{{PermissionTicket}} tags go on the image page or category page, not the talk page.
Also, you should put the tag on each of the image pages. I would do it, but I am not a member of the VRT, so they would all be tagged for review. If you don't tag them, sooner or later they will be deleted for no license. . Jim . . . (Jameslwoodward) (talk to me) 14:31, 15 December 2024 (UTC)Reply
@Jameslwoodward: Obviously that is not so simple. Files might be marked, but mostly they were not properly categorized before (as if they had been, then usually they should had been deleted long before) and more files could be added in the future (that still fall under the permission). So at the time of permission, there likely are only a few files (which usually are nominated for deletion). It has also been claimed to me that permission tickets could not be put on templates, so whatever reuse is hindered, what would make it simpler to mark when everything is ok. Tervist, mõned mu fotod monumentide, surnuaedade jm. infotahvlitest on nomineeritud kustutamisele. Kas tõesti on seal mingi autorikaitse peal? Minu loogika ütleb, et infotahvel on osa monumendist, ehk siis monumenti ka ei tohiks pildistada kui infotahvlit ei tohi. LeeMarx (talk) 19:54, 23 January 2025 (UTC)Reply
@LeeMarx: Jutt on seega sellest. Ülejäänutega on keerulisem.

Hello! Recently we created this page for Albania and Kosovo (I'm an admin of the Albanian Wikipedia). Should we do anything else to ensure participation in the competition? Maybe our page should be listed somewhere in the main page of the WSC? If so, can you help us with that given that it is the first time we are participating in this? We would be grateful. :) - Klein Muçi (talk) 10:22, 29 October 2025 (UTC)Reply
The main landing page for the international participation is this. I now updated it. Just checking if you would like to use two different upload forms or just one is enought? As of now I have only updated the Albanian one, but could update the other as well. Kruusamägi (talk) 11:04, 29 October 2025 (UTC)Reply
Thank you! Yes, 2 different forms. If I'm not mistaken, I've already set up 2 different campaigns with their own different categories. - Klein Muçi (talk) 13:56, 29 October 2025 (UTC)Reply

Dear Kruusamägi,
I hope you are doing well!
I just uploaded two photos to WSC 2025 by using the international form which has an open upload period of 01.11.2025 to 31.12.2025 according to this page and this page.
I noticed that the form automatically places images in categories from the WSC 2023 competition instead of categories of the WSC 2025 competition. I guess the numbers where just not updated in the uploadwizzard. Would it be possible to update the form so that it places the pictures directly in the 2025 category ?
Thank you in advance for your help and wishing you a nice day!

Hi I need some help with the category for Wikilobes Scoence in Australia & New Zealand. We are running a combined campaign because both countries work very closely together on these topics and its more efficient than running campaigns in each country. Would it be possible for {{Wiki Science Competition 2025/i18n}} to have
| aunz = [[Category:Images from Wiki Science Competition 2025 in Australia and New Zealand|{{PAGENAME}}]]
added so that the campaign captures images in to the category rather than having them fall through via
|#default=[[Category:Images from Wiki Science Competition 2025 in an unknown country|{{PAGENAME}}]]
Thank you for the edit but it still says that it's closed. It might indeed be a cache problem but I thought that it would update after 2 days. Do you know if there is any way to purge the cache? -- Giles Laurent (talk) 07:18, 17 November 2025 (UTC)Reply
If you want to take part in WSC2025, please consult this page. Only some national categories are associated to competitions with local prizes.
If you are an expert user, we remind you that images uploaded within the deadline can be included in any case in their national category even if not uploaded with the main interface.
If you already took part in a country that has completed its upload phase (such as Chile or Bangladesh), please consider improving the description in English of your files (click on the edit button), since such description is what the international jury will use to evaluate them. World finalists will be finalized after March 2026.
Sorry for bothering you and have a nice wiki.

Hi. I am helping the lead organiser of the WSC edition of the UK, and she asked me to help with building the standalone upload page, that can be activated only by creating the necessary page in the Campagin: page. Could you look at this? NikosLikomitros (talk) 21:47, 4 December 2025 (UTC)Reply

Hello Kruusamägi!
Camera1 mgxCommons-Photographers User Group-logo-en
As we step into a new year, we’re happy to invite you to take part in “Your Most Memorable Shot 2025.”
Since 2018, photographers from across the Wikimedia community have come together at the beginning of each year to share the photographs that meant the most to them over the past twelve months. Now in its eighth iteration, this tradition continues to be a space for reflection, storytelling, and celebrating meaningful moments through photography.
Whether you are a member of the Commons Photographers User Group or not, you are warmly welcome to participate and invite others too. Every image carries a story, and your perspective helps enrich this collective showcase.
Whenever you’re ready, please select your most cherished photograph from 2025 and share it on the designated page.
The deadline for submissions is 28 February 2026, so we hope you’ll join us before then.
We look forward to discovering the moments that made your year memorable and to continuing this wonderful tradition together.

2024 Picture of the Year:Mundari man polishing the horns of one of his Watusi cows using a mixture of cow urine and ash as a ritualistic and protective practice in a temporary cattle camp in Terekeka, South Sudan.
Dear Wikimedian,
Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2025 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year is the twentieth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favourite images featured on Commons during the last year (2025) to produce a single Picture of the Year.
The top 30 overall and the top 5% of most popular images in each category will continue to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just five images to become the Picture of the Year.

Hi everyone,
Wikimedia Commons is pleased to finally announce the winners of this year's Picture of the Year 2025 contest! We had some truly incredible finalists to choose from, but the community has spoken.
Here are your top three winning images:
First place: The aftermath of an Israeli airstrike in Gaza City on October 9, 2023, leaving widespread destruction in the Rimal area. Attribution: WAFA (Q2915969) / CC-BY-SA 3.0
Second place: Baby cape fur seal (Arctocephalus pusillus) sleeping at Cape cross, Namibia. Attribution: Giles Laurent / CC-BY-SA 4.0
Third place: A gigantic jet photographed from the International Space Station by astronaut Nichole Ayers. Attribution: public domain
You can view the full results and see where all your favorite images placed here: Full 2025 Results
I also want to highlight what an incredible turnout we had. In the second round, we saw a massive jump in both the number of users voting and the total votes cast. We had exactly 13,979 votes cast by 3,509 users! To put that in perspective, last year we had 7,403 votes from 2,837 users. It is amazing to see that level of growth and community engagement.
Thank you to everyone who voted, helped organize, and generally made the contest such a huge success this year!

Dear member of the Commons Photographers User Group,
I hope you’re well and enjoy your time as a photographer on Wikimedia Commons. In my role of the new chair of the user group, I have a couple of updates to share with you.
After the election, the new board met for the first time on March 21 and immediately got to work. We elected the organization’s officers and decided to move from quarterly to monthly board meetings. We believe meeting more frequently will create more opportunities to serve our members effectively and help move the group forward.
We also successfully applied for a pre-conference at the upcoming Wikimania in Paris (July 21–25). If you’re planning to attend the conference, please consider joining us on July 21th for a day full of conversations about photography and Commons. Please sign up here if you’re interested.
And finally, it’s my pleasure to invite you to our first online meeting, which will take place on May 31. Our member Wojciech, an experienced concert photographer, will give a talk on photographing orchestras during live performances. I’m especially excited that we’ll have the opportunity to meet online again and am very much looking forward to this event.
I only have a suspicion that this is so vague that people don't know what to put there, and so it ends up a pile of images that have nothing to do with the theme. Kruusamägi (talk) 21:58, 31 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
