The Wikimedia Commons (this website) only hosts media files with a realistic educational purpose and that can be used for any purpose, including:
use in any work, regardless of content
creation of derivative works
commercial use
free distribution
See Commons:Licensing for the copyright policy on Wikimedia Commons, and Commons:Image casebook for some specific examples. Some other Wikimedia projects have different licensing policies. For example, the English Wikipedia allows fair use of sounds and photographs. This is not the case on Wikimedia Commons; "fair use" materials are not acceptable here.
Please make sure that you only upload educational content you have created yourself, those which are out of copyright, or those for which you have the required permission for the work to be used in all the ways described above. Please note that derivative works of copyrighted material are also considered copyrighted. Again, please read through Commons:Licensing, which is quite crucial, to understanding how Wikimedia Commons works. Thanks for your contribution, and please do leave me a message if you have further questions.
All the above photographs are taken by me. Those are cover page of books written by Malayalam writer T.K.D. Muzhappilangad. My intention is clear that all these photos are to be used as a proof of his works when i created this authors page. I couldn't understand why these should be deleted. Help me to do better with WIKIMWDIA COMMONS.

This is a deletion request for the community to discuss whether the nominated page should be kept or deleted. Please voice your opinion in the linked request above. Thank you very much!
If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.
Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

hi, in general I like your uploads although many of your current pix are missing EXIF data to verify claimed 'own work'. Just a recommendation, don't remove the EXIF data of your digicam before uploading your works to Wikimedia Commons, hence, you'll avoid deletion requests.
Nevertheless, you strongly over-categorize your uploads, usually dozens at a time, although the past weeks the were categorized in a correct way, again and gain, see for instance among a serial of about more than 50 pix. Hence, it's urgently recommended to read Commons:Categories#Over-categorization to avoid wasting much time to fix these, your over-categoriation issues :) feel free to contact the Wikimedia help desk if you have questions related to categorization and other questions related to Wikimedia Commons. thx and bye, Roland zh (talk) 19:03, 21 January 2017 (UTC)Reply

File:TKD MUZHAPPILANGAD.jpg has been marked as a possible copyright violation. Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content—that is, images and other media files that can be used by anyone, for any purpose. Traditional copyright law does not grant these freedoms, and unless noted otherwise, everything you find on the web is copyrighted and not permitted here. For details on what is acceptable, please read Commons:Licensing. You may also find Commons:Copyright rules useful, or you can ask questions about Commons policies at the Commons:Help desk. If you are the copyright holder and the creator of the file, please read Commons:But it's my own work! for tips on how to provide evidence of that.
The file you added has been deleted. If you have written permission from the copyright holder, please have them send us a free license release via COM:VRT. If you believe that the deletion was not in accordance with policy, you may request undeletion. (It is not necessary to request undeletion if using VRT; the file will be automatically restored at the conclusion of the process.)
Warning: Wikimedia Commons takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

Dear sir, i have talked in detail with Malayalam author T.K.D. Muzhappilangad. And after that I have created an article about this author. With the permission of this author I took all that photographs belonging to him. The above mentioned photo is a poster of a screen play which was written by this author. There is no such copyright as these kind of posters are often seen on the street walls. And moreover this was a very old poster. I think it shouldn't be deleted. You can talk with Malayalam Wikipedia (ml.wiki) administrators about on this matter before deleting those photos. I am thinking of stop uploading photos to Commons.

Thanks for uploading File:Bharathanaatyam hss 6.jpg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.
If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there.
Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you.

Thanks for uploading File:A Description of old Fire Engine at Jaivilas Palace, Gwalior.jpg. This media is missing permission information. A source is given, but there is no proof that the author or copyright holder agreed to license the file under the given license. Please provide a link to an appropriate webpage with license information, or ask the author or copyright holder to send an email with copy of a written permission to VRT (permissions-commons@wikimedia.org). You may still be required to go through this procedure even if you are the author yourself; please see Commons:But it's my own work! for more details. After you emailed permission, you may replace the {{No permission since}} tag with {{subst:PP}} on file description page. Alternatively, you may click on "Challenge speedy deletion" below the tag if you wish to provide an argument why evidence of permission is not necessary in this case.
Please see this page for more information on how to confirm permission, or if you would like to understand why we ask for permission when uploading work that is not your own, or work which has been previously published (regardless of whether it is your own).
The file probably has been deleted. If you sent a permission, try to send it again after 14 days. Do not re-upload. When the VRT-member processes your mail, the file can be undeleted. Additionally you can request undeletion here, providing a link to the File-page on Commons where it was uploaded ([[:File:A Description of old Fire Engine at Jaivilas Palace, Gwalior.jpg]]) and the above demanded information in your request.

Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2022) to produce a single Picture of the Year.
Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.
For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topical categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you may vote for as many images as you like. The top 30 overall and the two most popular images in each category will continue to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just three images to become the Picture of the Year.

Thank you!
If you created this category, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for discussion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it. If the category is up for deletion because it has been superseded, consider the notion that although the category may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new category.
In all cases, please do not take the category discussion personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you!

Welcome to Wikimedia Commons. While everyone is welcome to contribute constructively to the project, one or more of your file uploads had missing or false information regarding its source and copyright status. Please note that Wikimedia Commons takes copyright rules and infringement very seriously. Files may only be uploaded and included if their copyright status meets the conditions stated in our licensing policy, and if their source is clearly documented. Files that fail to meet those conditions may be deleted, and users who fail to meet them may be blocked. Please follow our first steps, if you haven't already. If you have questions, feel free to ask at the Village Pump copyright question page or on my talk page. Thank you.

Your edit Special:Diff/1012245141 brought this page to my attention. I answered your question of 02:33. I have been here on Commons ten years longer than you and have a variety of group memberships conferred by Admins and Stewards due to their trust in me. I had that {{File copyright status}} message brought here from enwiki, modified for Commons, and vetted by Admins. All of those links I sent you at 00:16 involved deletion by Admins of files that you had asserted were free enough for Commons to host, but were found not to be free enough. So, to turn your question around, who do you think you are? — 🇺🇦Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 06:53, 24 March 2025 (UTC)Reply
Challenging someone's memory is not a right just because they occupy prominent positions in the Commons. It is not a good tendency. Treating someone who has contributed excellent photos to the Commons in such a disrespectful manner is not how someone like you should behave. I apologize. You should end this here. This causes me a lot of personal humiliation. I politely inform you that I do not require your advice regarding copyright matters. I do not know whether your intention is to delete the photos I have uploaded in the name of this. In any case, that is not appropriate. You will likely arrive at a decision after reviewing my modest contributions.Thank you. Shagil Kannur (talk) 07:27, 24 March 2025 (UTC)Reply
A file that you have uploaded to Wikimedia Commons, File:Turkish light.jpg, is a derivative work, containing an "image within an image". Examples of such works would include a photograph of a sculpture, a scan of a magazine cover, or a map that has been altered from the original. In each of these cases, the rights of the creator of the original must be considered, as well as those of the creator of the derivative work.
While the description page states who made this derivative work, it currently doesn't specify who created the original work, so the overall copyright status is unclear. If you did not create the original work depicted in this image, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright.
Please edit the file description and add the missing information, or the file may be deleted. If you created the original content yourself, enter this information as the source. If someone else created the content, the source should be the address to the web page where you found it, the name and ISBN of the book you scanned it from, or similar. You should also name the author, provide verifiable information to show that the content is in the public domain or has been published under a free license by its author, and add an appropriate template identifying the public domain or licensing status, if you have not already done so. Please add the required information for this and other files you have uploaded before adding more files. If you need assistance, please ask at the help desk. Thank you!

What I want to say is that you should withdraw from this effort. How is this a copyright violation? Please refrain from approaching matters you are unaware of with preconceived notions. Shagil Kannur (talk) 07:31, 24 March 2025 (UTC)Reply
Hey man. For this image, i and my friends are the designers. This is one of our festivals in Kerala. And the Turkish light was bought from a shop. Nobody know who designed it. Hello Shagil Muzhappilangad,
The world’s traditions are disappearing faster than we can document them, but you can help change that.
On behalf of the Wiki Loves Folklore International Team, we are reaching out to invite you to contribute to the 2026 edition of our global campaign.
Share Your Cultural Heritage with the World
Wiki Loves Folklore is an international media contest dedicated to documenting the "intangible" beauty of our cultures. Whether it’s the vibrant colours of a folk festival, the rhythm of a traditional dance, the secrets of a family recipe, or the legends of your hometown, your media helps preserve these legacies for generations to come.
How You Can Contribute
Participating is simple, and every upload contributes to the world's largest free knowledge repository:
Capture: Take photos, record videos, or capture audio of folk activities, music, mythology, or traditional wear.
Upload: Share your files on Wikimedia Commons between 1 February 2026 and 31 March 2026.
Win: Beyond the satisfaction of preservation, there are international prizes for the most impactful contributions.

Hi everyone,
Wikimedia Commons is pleased to finally announce the winners of this year's Picture of the Year 2025 contest! We had some truly incredible finalists to choose from, but the community has spoken.
Here are your top three winning images:
First place: The aftermath of an Israeli airstrike in Gaza City on October 9, 2023, leaving widespread destruction in the Rimal area. Attribution: WAFA (Q2915969) / CC-BY-SA 3.0
Second place: Baby cape fur seal (Arctocephalus pusillus) sleeping at Cape cross, Namibia. Attribution: Giles Laurent / CC-BY-SA 4.0
Third place: A gigantic jet photographed from the International Space Station by astronaut Nichole Ayers. Attribution: public domain
You can view the full results and see where all your favorite images placed here: Full 2025 Results
I also want to highlight what an incredible turnout we had. In the second round, we saw a massive jump in both the number of users voting and the total votes cast. We had exactly 13,979 votes cast by 3,509 users! To put that in perspective, last year we had 7,403 votes from 2,837 users. It is amazing to see that level of growth and community engagement.
Thank you to everyone who voted, helped organize, and generally made the contest such a huge success this year!
