★Your nomination has been reviewed and promoted★ Congratulations! The image you nominated was reviewed and has now been promoted as a valued image. It is considered to be the most valued image on Commons within the scope: Close-up view of front façade of Shankaracharya Temple, Srinagar. If you would like to nominate another image, please do so at Valued images candidates.
Please notify previous voters of this change. Remember: "A support vote that was made before a change of scope is not counted unless it is reconfirmed afterwards; an oppose vote is counted unless it is changed or withdrawn".
Question Should "restored" be part of the scope? There are several more complete pictures of the facade, though I don't know if we're looking at the front or back in them, and the building seems in rougher condition. This is one example. Also, since neither this photo nor the cropped version of this photo show the entire front, it's arguable which version is best in scope. -- Ikan Kekek (talk) 01:44, 19 April 2022 (UTC)Reply
@Ikan Kekek: It's less restored and more just the addition of railing, metal doors, protective scaffolding on top etc; this is the front facade, but yes, there seem to be more fuller pictures. Changing scope to "Close-up". Last change of scope, please judge if this scope fits. If not, then this picture probably shouldn't be a VI.--UnpetitproleX (talk) 02:12, 19 April 2022 (UTC)Reply

Hello UnpetitproleX,
regarding your nomination: I do not know what went wrong, but it should be possible to remove the labels without creating posterization. Please try if you can fix this (probably starting with the original photo again). If it does not work, ping me and I can try my luck = try to help, too ;–).
@Aristeas: Thank you very much, I have tried my best to fix that by re-editing the original performing all intervening edits at once to that. Please let me know if this edit is satisfactory, I probably cannot do better than this with my very limited experience. Your inputs are appreciated! UnpetitproleX (talk) 12:09, 27 April 2022 (UTC)Reply
Hello UnpetitproleX, thank you very much – the sky is much better! Now the image should be ready for a fair discussion.
Two general photo editing tips: (1) If you want to make several changes to a photo, first just open it and save it in a loseless format, e.g. as a TIFF image (*.tif), PSD (*.psd) image or, if you use Gimp, XCF (*xcf) image. Then you can make as many edits as you want and save it in between many times without quality losses. Only when you are completely done save the image again as a JPEG (*.jpg) image for uploading to Commons. Keep the original TIFF/PSD/XCF image to have it ready if users request more changes.
(2) Sometimes, when doing several complex gradation changes (making parts of the image brighter etc.), it can be helpful to convert the (TIFF/PSD/XCF) image first to a 16-bit image. Then do your changes. Only when you want export your result again as a JPEG image, convert it back to an 8-bit image and then save it as an JPEG image; keep the TIFF/PSD/XCF image in 16 bit. Using 16 bit can help to prevent posterization when doing several complex gradation changes one after another.

… if I have messed up your last nomination or made it more complicated. I know that alternative versions always make nominatinons more complex. I did not want to disrupt the nomination; I just saw King’s point and had to admit that more sky would IMHO be better, so I tried to show how that would look. Best, --Aristeas (talk) 10:15, 4 June 2022 (UTC)Reply
@Aristeas: More sky is definitely better, and the image does indeed look better! I’m hopeful that the image will be featured—whichever version—because it definitely deserves to be. Lets see how it goes. And no need to apologise! Whenever I come across an image I can’t fix myself (like this image whose CAs I’m unable to remove), I always think of you, though I rarely ask for help so as not to bother you haha. Thank you. for nominating my images for QI and FP. This is much appreciated with your efforts to promote photos from South Asia.
I request that you please inform me before nominating an FP so I have a chance to improve the image, or to give you my opinion in case I believe an image is not worth FP. This will improve the success ratio. Regards --Tagooty (talk) 03:16, 6 July 2022 (UTC)Reply

Dear Wikimedian,
Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2023 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the eighteenth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2023) to produce a single Picture of the Year.
Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.
For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topical categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you may vote for as many images as you like. The top 30 overall and top 5% of most popular images in each category will continue to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just three images to become the Picture of the Year.

Hello UnpetitproleX, maybe I am wrong but it seems you do not to belong to the autopatrolled users. You certainly deserve that user right because you have made a large count of helpful edits. Therefore please ask at Commons:Requests for rights#Autopatrol for the autopatrol user right. If you get it all your edits will automatically be marked as patrolled; this helps other people to distinguish them from the edits of new users which need to be patrolled (checked). Best, – Aristeas (talk) 18:35, 17 May 2025 (UTC)Reply
And sorry, I wrote the lines above hastily, but I did not want to have a go at you, on the contrary, I wanted to make you happy by telling you that you certainly deserve that user right and just need to ask for it. :–) – Aristeas (talk) 07:51, 18 May 2025 (UTC)Reply
Hi @Aristeas: thanks for the kind words. :) And apologies for responding late, I have been a tad bit busy. I will make a post at request for autopatrol soon, your suggestion is well taken! UnpetitproleX(Talk)09:36, 18 May 2025 (UTC)Reply

Given the 3 opposes, there is practically no chance of promotion. Perhaps if I'd made improvements beforehand, it might have stood a chance. Feel free to withdraw the nom. Incidentally, this is one of my early uploads taken 9 years ago with an entry-level DSLR. Thanks again for the nomination. Tagooty (talk) 12:41, 30 September 2025 (UTC)Reply
@Tagooty: I came across the image recently, and realized that I had planned on nominating it in 2022 (see this discussion). I figured it should be good enough to nom now. It does appear to be failing, but I will wait a little longer before withdrawing. Thanks for your message. UnpetitproleX(Talk)13:00, 30 September 2025 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for promoting three of my images. I hardly ever promote images myself, because I think that the "normal" process - self promotion and appraisal by one single person - is very unsattisfactory. Having a third person making a first selection is in my eyes much more satisfactory, because it shows that such an image must have at least caught somebody else's eyes befor making such a selection. I have uploaded a lot of images to WLE-India and WLM-India, and they have a special section in the prices for WLM regarding QI and FP images. But even though, you won't find any self-promotions from me to enter that part of the competition. I am looking forward to the WLF-competition and at the moment am already working over the loads of images from my trip in February/March. Also processing them with lightroom. You reprocessed the File:Brihadisvara Temple during Maha Shivaratri-WUS03611. I am fine with that. Had you asked, I could have provided you with the RAW-image and perhaps you could have done even better. Nice to have made contact with you like this and perhaps we can stay in contact. Wuselig is my regular User Account, only when I upload images I want to take personal credit for, do I upload under my full name. Wuselig (talk) 13:23, 20 October 2025 (UTC)Reply
Hello @Wuselig: thanks for the message. You have uploaded some great pictures from southern India, I did go through them and I plan on nominating more at QI and FP. The Brihadeswara temple image is really nice and I re-edited it because I wish to nominate it at FPC eventually. In the future, could I ask you to make edits/fixes on any pictures? It is always better when the edits come from the original author, in my view. Usually minor regular fixes such as perspective correction, crop, removal of chromatic aberrations etc., which should be easy to do on lightroom. Also, please do check out the discussion at Commons:Featured picture candidates/File:Eravikulam National Park-WUS07189.jpg, where an editor has requested some information. Very nice to hear from you, keep making your very valuable contributions here! UnpetitproleX(Talk)13:36, 20 October 2025 (UTC)Reply
Have a look at the new version. I reduced the sharpness and adjusted the noise reduction. And I dehazed the sky. But if you email me, I can give you a try at the RAW-file. Wuselig (talk) 16:08, 23 October 2025 (UTC)Reply

Hello UnpetitproleX,
The world’s traditions are disappearing faster than we can document them, but you can help change that.
On behalf of the Wiki Loves Folklore International Team, we are reaching out to invite you to contribute to the 2026 edition of our global campaign.
Share Your Cultural Heritage with the World
Wiki Loves Folklore is an international media contest dedicated to documenting the "intangible" beauty of our cultures. Whether it’s the vibrant colours of a folk festival, the rhythm of a traditional dance, the secrets of a family recipe, or the legends of your hometown, your media helps preserve these legacies for generations to come.
How You Can Contribute
Participating is simple, and every upload contributes to the world's largest free knowledge repository:
Capture: Take photos, record videos, or capture audio of folk activities, music, mythology, or traditional wear.
Upload: Share your files on Wikimedia Commons between 1 February 2026 and 31 March 2026.
Win: Beyond the satisfaction of preservation, there are international prizes for the most impactful contributions.

Hi everyone,
Wikimedia Commons is pleased to finally announce the winners of this year's Picture of the Year 2025 contest! We had some truly incredible finalists to choose from, but the community has spoken.
Here are your top three winning images:
First place: The aftermath of an Israeli airstrike in Gaza City on October 9, 2023, leaving widespread destruction in the Rimal area. Attribution: WAFA (Q2915969) / CC-BY-SA 3.0
Second place: Baby cape fur seal (Arctocephalus pusillus) sleeping at Cape cross, Namibia. Attribution: Giles Laurent / CC-BY-SA 4.0
Third place: A gigantic jet photographed from the International Space Station by astronaut Nichole Ayers. Attribution: public domain
You can view the full results and see where all your favorite images placed here: Full 2025 Results
I also want to highlight what an incredible turnout we had. In the second round, we saw a massive jump in both the number of users voting and the total votes cast. We had exactly 13,979 votes cast by 3,509 users! To put that in perspective, last year we had 7,403 votes from 2,837 users. It is amazing to see that level of growth and community engagement.
Thank you to everyone who voted, helped organize, and generally made the contest such a huge success this year!
